The book "Euphemization and Derogation in Political Discourse" by Mona Bahmani offers an in-depth analysis of ideological representation and the manipulation of realities in the news during the Gaza War of 2008-2009. It contributes to the field of Political Discourse Analysis (PDA) and examines how linguistic means such as euphemization and derogation reflect the ideology as well as the self- and other-representations created by discourse producers. By applying van Dijk's 'ideological square' to the lexical choices in newspaper reporting, the manipulative function of these linguistic tools is revealed. The book combines quantitative and qualitative analytical methods to determine the dominance of one euphemistic type over another and to assess the effectiveness of this dichotomous word choice in the perception of realities. The findings show that euphemization and derogation are two discursive strategies available to media manipulators to reshape reality and thus influence societal perception.
