July 14, 1864, wind force eleven, just before Cape Horn: A message in a bottle is sent on its journey, which continues to shape our understanding of the sea and global connections to this day. With this and many other bottles filled with requests for return, geophysicist and polar researcher Georg Neumayer established maritime current research. He documented his large-scale experiment in albums, where he collected over 600 responses to the floating messages. While examining the albums, Wolfgang Struck reports on the often puzzling routes of the bottles, as well as the captains and passengers who released them, the fishermen, beachcombers, and port officials who found them – and broadens his perspective on the incredibly fascinating scientific and cultural history that message in a bottle has traversed long before Neumayer's experiment.
