Product details
The rococo painter Franz Martin Kuen is one of the most important fresco artists in southern Germany. In the heyday of the Rococo period, the Weißenhorn painter Franz Martin Kuen (1719-1771) created an impressive oeuvre of ceiling frescoes, altarpieces and portrait paintings. Trained in Augsburg, later in Rome and especially by the famous Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in Venice, Kuen demonstrates how artistic exchange was cultivated across great distances at that time.Kuen demonstrates how artistic exchange was cultivated across great distances and how models of European painting were taken to the remotest places in order to illustrate the hope for divine help and salvation in a splendid way. In a broad panorama of mainly ecclesiastical ceiling paintings, Kuen sketched the salvific link between this world and the hereafter and thus became one of the most successful image-makers of Swabian piety. For almost three decades, Kuen's clients included clerical and secular dignitaries as well as simple parish priests. Even today, we encounter his paintings in more than 50 places between the Danube, Lake Ammersee and Lake Constance, particularly prominently in the former Benedictine monastery of Wiblingen and the Premonstratensian monastery of Roggenburg, to which he was associated as 'court painter' for almost two decades. More details: With his workshop located in Weißenhorn, his work is concentrated in central Swabia, but also extends beyond from the Federsee and Bodensee in the west to the Ammersee in the east. Kuen was trained in his father's workshop in Weißenhorn and by Johann Georg Bergmüller in Augsburg. In the Wengenstift in Ulm and above all with the library hall of the Benedictine Abbey in Wiblingen, he brilliantly achieves his first major commissions. Kuen then continued his training with a trip to Italy. During this trip, he was particularly impressed by the Venetian workshop of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, which had a formative influence on his further artistic work. Inseparably linked with Kuen's further work is the Reichsstift Roggenburg (district of Neu-Ulm), whose complete painterly decoration he took over for years. Dr. Matthias Kunze is an art historian and museum director in Kuen's native town of Weißenhorn, Ulrich Hoffmann is chairman of the museum association.
