The determination of the position of people or objects within buildings using radio-based technologies is still largely uncharted territory in many respects. This raises questions about potential applications and feasibility. This work will list some possible applications and showcase technologies that are already available on the market. The Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) at the University of Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Lemgo has acquired the radio-based indoor positioning system from Ubisense for research purposes. Ubisense uses ultra-wideband frequencies for position determination. This system will be thoroughly tested for accuracy and reliability of position determination using an automated test setup. In conclusion, the reader will gain an overview of existing technologies, including insights into their advantages and disadvantages, as well as some potential applications. However, the focus will be on the investigation of the Ubisense system.
