The present work pursues the fundamental thesis that, despite numerous signs of crisis, it is premature to speak of the end of trade unions. However, regaining their capacity to act requires that they address current environmental challenges and initiate organizational transformation processes. Furthermore, German trade unions must also implement an active member recruitment policy, as only a sufficiently high level of organization leads to recognition as representatives of all employees and thus as a societal actor whose voice carries weight in current debates. Therefore, the question of sustainable strategies for member recruitment is at the center of this work. Problems and potential solutions are exemplarily analyzed using the case of IG Metall and its alliances with new social movements, as well as the member bonus in the North Rhine-Westphalia district: To what extent are these projects suitable for contributing to an improved member development and thus revitalizing IG Metall?.
