We are used to living at the border. Every day I cross it on my way to school, every day my mother crosses the border to go to her job at the Reichsbahn, and my father rides his bike to West Berlin. Borders are our everyday reality; only Bärbel is spared from this because she goes to school in our town, just like I used to. How simple everything was back then.
