The "Inner Emigration" of the years 1933 - 1945 is one of the most underestimated sectors of German literary history. Authors such as Stefan Andres, Werner Bergengruen, Georg Britting, Ernst Wiechert, Ricarda Huch and many others are now almost only known to specialists. Masterpieces that illustrate the often disputed vitality and diversity of that era have largely disappeared from memory. This study identifies the literary-historical losses and honours both significant aesthetic achievements and a courage of resistance that is widely underestimated today. Günter Scholdt is one of the few thorough experts on the subject. In his new book, he is not only concerned with making the forgotten and its contexts accessible, but also with the special significance that dissident writing from the Nazi years has with regard to the upheavals of our own time.
