The Hainish novels by the American author Ursula K. Le Guin, daughter of cultural anthropologist Alfred Kroeber, undoubtedly rank among the high points of elevated fantasy literature. In particular, "The Left Hand of Darkness," "The Dispossessed," and "The Word for World Is Forest" have long established themselves as multifaceted cultural critique classics. This study offers a completely new approach to one of the most interesting and relevant worldviews in contemporary science fiction by examining the ethnological aspects of the currently 7 novels, 5 novellas, and 12 short stories from the Hainish universe.
