Hans Nägele (1884-1973) was born as the son of an embroiderer in Götzis in the Vorarlberg region and studied chemistry in Vienna and Graz before experiencing World War I and the Russian Revolution up close as a civilian prisoner in Russia. As the editor-in-chief of the Greater German and later National Socialist 'Vorarlberger Tagblatt', Nägele significantly influenced public opinion in Vorarlberg between 1919 and 1944, before dedicating himself to local studies after the fall of the 'Third Reich'. He never abandoned his völkisch-nationalist beliefs but merely adapted them to the new circumstances. Through his numerous books and articles on the Vorarlberg textile industry, local tourism, customs, and the culture of Vorarlberg, he shaped the self-image of the people of Vorarlberg long after his death. Nevertheless, he is now nearly forgotten. This book aims to bring the fanatical 'Alemann' Nägele back into the public eye.
