Honoré Gabriel Victor de Riqueti, Marquis de Mirabeau (1749-1791) was a French politician, physiocrat, writer, and publicist during the Enlightenment. He participated in the French Revolution and held influential positions until his sudden death. Like other Enlightenment thinkers, Mirabeau viewed the British constitutional monarchy with the Bill of Rights as a model for a desirable societal framework. His vision of a civilized society also included Jewish emancipation. Alongside his political activities, the writerically gifted Mirabeau secretly produced several erotic works that continue to resonate today. His novels are among the most explicit erotic books of the Enlightenment, advocating for sexual freedom and gender self-determination, as well as the necessity of a connection between spiritual and physical love.
