Heinrich Düntzer, born in 1813 in Cologne, dedicated himself to classical and linguistic studies since 1830.

From the preface:

In compiling the Homeric essays I have published in various journals over a full human lifetime, I find myself as justified as I am obligated due to the importance of the matter and the thoughtful seriousness with which I have conducted my investigations. Although they have gradually emerged from a loving and penetrating contemplation of the beautifully radiant poems that shine through despite all the obscurity of tradition, they will only exert their full effect when united, where one supports and elevates the other. The way my perspective has been shaped and defined in relation to the opinions that have emerged over time will not remain without significant influence on their assessment; for it proves its sound nature precisely by not feeling pressured by the viewpoints and observations established by others, but rather being able to do justice to them without compromising itself, indeed, it even stands the test against them.
