In today's companies, workflows are becoming increasingly important in connection with extensive business processes, as the number and complexity of these processes, and thus the difficulty of adequate implementation, continue to rise. Business processes firmly integrate people into their workflows, which makes complete automation unfeasible. General support and partial automation are possible through suitable workflow applications and the definition and implementation of individual workflows—specifically Human Workflows. The author, Ronny Schattauer, provides an introductory overview of workflow terminology, various workflow classifications, and existing description languages. Building on this, the characteristics of Human Workflows are presented comparatively, and the requirements for a Human Workflow architecture are discussed. The Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation is examined in terms of architecture, functionality, and the realization of Human Workflows. The book is aimed at both software developers and architects, as well as experienced project managers.
