The book "Identification of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) Cultivars" offers comprehensive insights into various methods for the characterization of tomato varieties. It discusses the application of these methods to ensure the genetic purity of tomato seeds and to conduct cultivation trials. In the context of the 2001 law on the protection of plant varieties and the rights of farmers (PPV&FRA), it addresses the registration and protection of new and existing plant varieties based on their morphological characteristics, such as distinctness, uniformity, and stability (DUS). The book highlights that, compared to cereal crops, research on the characterization of vegetable crops is limited. In addition to DUS tests, it also covers chemotaxonomic methods and electrophoresis techniques, which offer advantages over conventional DUS tests. This work is aimed at researchers involved in variety characterization who wish to develop new tomato varieties.
