The first Aachen conference 'Identity of Architecture' in January 2017 focused on the site as one of the fundamental influencing factors in the design and construction of architecture and urban spaces. Built architecture is always tied to a real location. The characteristics of the site lead to the individualization of the task, creating a uniqueness that can only be uncovered through dialogue and reference to the physical context. Engaging with the environment requires both: an appreciation of what exists and an awareness that architecture reflects the social conditions and technical possibilities of its time, and thus always signifies change.
