Product details
Boney M. were one of the biggest pop sensations of the late seventies: a disco band dreamed up by producer Frank Farian, who at the beginning was actually only looking for four pretty figureheads for his already finished songs. While Bobby Farrell and Maizie Williams remained largely that, the singers Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett soon contributed decisively to the sound of the project. The four of them first toured through small clubs, until overnight they became a huge success: "Daddy Cool" became a high-flyer and shot to the top of the German charts. From 1976 to 1978, Boney M. delivered seven number one singles in a row, and the quartet also landed numerous hits in the following years. Marcia Barrett begins her autobiography with her memories of these turbulent times, of crazy television appearances and daring photo sessions, of caviar, champagne and luxury hotels, but it also tells of the darker side of a life as a pop star: Farian demanded the utmost commitment from the four band members, who hardly ever got a chance to work in the studio, but had to be ready for gigs at any time. Boney M. travelled the world and were celebrated by their fans, but remained dependent on the whims of the mastermind who pulled the strings in the background. Barrett describes the mechanisms of the pop industry at that time in a fascinating and knowledgeable way, in which producers and managers tried to create hits with a lot of calculation, but at best saw their musicians as compliant puppets. For fifteen years, Marcia Barrett was part of Boney M., and this time shaped her life. But her private story is just as exciting, from her childhood in Jamaica to her earlier years as a singer, when she first tried to gain a foothold in England, then later in Germany. In the nineties, after the separation from Boney M., she finally had to master completely different challenges. Barrett fell ill with cancer several times, but fought her way back into life courageously and undaunted after each diagnosis: "Keep going" remained her motto despite all setbacks.
