What was a shocking realization in ethnology in the 1980s is now a consensus: every ethnography is as much about "us" as it is about "them," whose world is being studied. But what exactly goes into ethnological writing? Not least, it includes personal readings: no text exists without other texts. For this volume, the editorial team of Edition Trickster approached 22 ethnologists with the question: "Which text has shaped your thinking?" The responses were unexpectedly diverse. The authors describe in very personal texts how certain films, ethnographies, graphic novels, an academic essay, or a poem triggered that "aha moment," which has had a formative impact on their ethnological thinking or even changed their life path, and to which they continually return.
