The Bible offers ample material with misogynistic statements that have significantly influenced our culture. Can we therefore label the Bible as misogynistic? Or are there other texts within the Bible that allow for a more nuanced view of women? Are there ways to diminish the power of passages that have the potential to justify the oppression of women by placing them in the context of their origin and through careful reading? How can we responsibly engage with these passages today and prevent an archaic view of women from being propagated as an ideal by fundamentalist groups through selective Bible verses? The contributors to this volume provide a scientifically grounded approach to the constructions of femininity in the Bible. They explain exegetical approaches to the diversity of biblical representations of women, including the feminine aspects of God, in an easily understandable manner.
