The previous recognitions of Johannes Winkler primarily reflect his contributions as the editor of the first specialized journal "Die Rakete" and as the first chairman of the "Verein für Raumschiffahrt" from 1927 to 1929. A second focus is the successful launch of the first European liquid rocket on March 14, 1931, in Dessau, as well as the design, construction, and launch of a sounding rocket using liquid methane and liquid oxygen, which, however, failed on October 6, 1932. New documents that have been evaluated since 2015 confirm that he was an outstanding pioneer in the development of rocket engines in Braunschweig from 1929 to 1938 and afterwards, successfully demonstrating the bundling of three engines on a truck in Dessau.
