When the author published his study 'Youth Consumption' in this publishing house in 1991, he could not have anticipated that this topic would generate such great interest in the scientific community, in the media, and among those responsible for youth and consumer policy, leading to numerous lectures as well as radio and television interviews, and ultimately that this study would be out of print within just a few years. This interest prompted a follow-up study on the consumption and leisure behavior of young people in the old and new federal states, which was conducted in 1996 with approximately 300 adolescents in Bielefeld and Halle an der Saale, representative locations for the old and new federal states. This allows not only for an updated overview but also for the depiction of changes in consumption and leisure behaviors, as well as a comparison of young people in the old and new federal states. The present study focuses primarily on the consumption of adolescents, similar to the preceding study. It addresses questions regarding the amount, source, and use of adolescents' income, their ownership of and desire for consumer goods, and the criteria they use when shopping. Additionally, we want to know how young people spend their leisure time, what music they enjoy listening to, which television programs they watch, and what newspapers, magazines, and books they read. Furthermore, we are interested in what values they consider important for themselves or for society and what lifestyles they maintain.
