Contractures are common among elderly individuals. They reduce quality of life due to loss of mobility, increase the degree of dependence, and cause pain. Thus, contractures represent a significant problem not only for those directly affected but also from a caregiving and economic perspective. Nevertheless, contractures have rarely been the subject of nursing research until now. The aim of this study is, in addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of research, to present the knowledge of caregivers and their management of contractures in residential elderly care in Vorarlberg. Furthermore, specific practical recommendations will be derived. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study with a descriptive, quantitative design surveyed 268 caregivers and 29 nursing service managers using two questionnaires. The results indicate that there is still a need for training regarding contracture prevention among residents of elderly or nursing homes in Vorarlberg. This study aims to serve as a basis for further nursing research on this topic.
