When it comes to memory, there are still significant differences between East and West. Since 1989, the countries of the former socialist bloc have experienced genuine memory surges that shake their respective national self-images during a time of economic, political, and media upheaval. This is particularly evident in Romania: Following the Ceausescu era, the 1990s saw a state-imposed forgetting, which accompanied the deconstruction of the once-dominant national founding and hero myths. As in other Eastern European countries, this has led to the emergence of new forms of remembrance and commemoration. Scholars from Romania, Moldova, and Germany explore this new cultural memory of Romanian post-totalitarian society through analyses of literature, art, and film.
