Product details
Kurt Albert (1954–2010) was one of the greatest and most insightful climbers and mountaineers of all time. Born in Nuremberg, he was one of the pioneers of the international free climbing movement, which had one of its centers in the Franconian Jura. With the invention of the red point, Kurt Albert made climbing history. His sharp mind, openness to people and ideas, adventurous spirit, and wit made him the focal point of a sports and social subculture whose influences extended far beyond climbing and mountaineering itself. Along with this, traditions, values, and thought patterns changed, and climbing became a popular sport, the economic and aesthetic significance of which is now clearly visible in many parts of society. With numerous first ascents, Kurt Albert left his mark in the mountains of the world. Even more remarkable than his alpine achievements is the consistency with which he maintained his lifestyle over the decades. Kurt Albert was not just a free climber – he primarily and foremost led a free, independent life. In his biography, the award-winning author and filmmaker Tom Dauer fills a gap in memory left by Kurt Albert's sudden accidental death in September 2010. His book will appeal to all those who understand climbing and mountaineering not just as a sport, but as a way of life. Tips: Gripping and long-awaited: The compelling biography of one of the most creative alpinists of all time and the answer to the question of why climbing is a way of life. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Kurt Albert's death on September 28, 2020, based on previously inaccessible private text and image archives of Kurt Albert as well as conversations with companions and contemporaries.
