Individuals with chronic hepatitis C were willing to share a part of their lives in qualitative interviews: life with hepatitis C. The aim of this work was to analyze and portray their experiences of illness and disease, as little is known about the living situation of those directly affected. This empirical study aims to contribute to filling this gap. It also seeks to provide a scientific contribution to a better understanding of the complex interplay between illness, social environment, and the individual. The analyses of illness experiences and perceptions begin with the impact of the diagnosis on the life story of those affected and the confrontation with an uncertain future. The images that individuals have of hepatitis C and how these change over the course of their illness are described. Changes and reorientations, as well as efforts to minimize the disease's influence as much as possible, can be observed in many relevant areas of the lives of those affected, ranging from the intimacy of body perception to everyday interactions with others.
