In our later years, my husband and I became migratory birds. We embarked on a journey for which there was no return ticket. It is a story that begins with a departure from a somewhat provincial village in the Swiss Midlands and leads to an island in the Atlantic. Leaving our comfort zone at home turned out to be a fortunate yet risky decision that we—two typical Swiss—made in 2006. My husband and I were united in the simple yet profound realization: We want to experience more! We did not want to make reckless decisions. Like many older emigrants, the climatic conditions in southern regions were a reason for us to leave Switzerland. However, we also harbored another dream: a bungalow complex should provide us with a fulfilling activity and a means of livelihood in our new home. Fourteen years have passed since then. It is natural that we soon no longer perceived the fascinating view of the Atlantic as intensely as we did in the beginning. The same applied to the fantastic sunsets, the colorful houses, and the night sky filled with millions of stars. Perhaps this is the definition of home when all the good becomes somewhat normal. In this book, I want to tell about the time when we relocated from the old paradise to a new one. About a hundred experiences, insights, and realizations in our new home. About beautiful, but also painful days. About the little things in life that unfold here, about our own insecurities, cultural differences and peculiarities, about many moments of happiness, about encounters with locals and our guests. I want to tell stories of people who connect a life philosophy with this small, lovable piece of land or are here in search of the meaning of life.
