Heloise and Abelard, Rosa Luxemburg or Hannah Arendt, they all left love letters that have become famous. They are very personal letters in which they show their most secret thoughts and feelings. Letters and especially love letters are a sign of openness and affection. While letter writing has gone out of fashion today, it was different in the 17th century - you could call it the Age of the Letter. The correspondence between Damaris Cudworth Masham and the Enlightenment philosopher John Locke dates from this period. Masham admires the almost 30 years older and well-known English philosopher, wants to share her thoughts with him. It is often a one-sided exchange in which she reveals much of what moves her. The two are united by an intellectual love, a deep agreement on questions of life and knowledge, and mutual respect. And so the correspondence between Damaris Cudworth Masham and John Locke provides a life picture of the two main characters. In "Love Letters to a Philosopher", Ursula I. Meyer also paints a picture of the time after the English Civil War. While the former power structures are stabilising again and everyday life is returning to normal, the corset of women's roles is becoming tighter. Only a few create space for themselves in the tightly knit lives of bourgeois and aristocratic women. For Damaris Cudworth Masham, this is the correspondence with one of the most influential philosophers of her time.
