The book "Magnetic Levitation Control System From Theory to Practice" offers a comprehensive examination of the development of a magnetic levitation system, addressing both theoretical and practical aspects. It provides detailed insights into the components of the system, including electromagnets, controllers, and sensors. The electromagnet, designed around a steel core, utilizes one of the best ferromagnetic materials. The co-energy function of the system is employed to derive the transfer function as well as the mathematical models in state space. The book highlights the inherent instability of the system and describes the implementation of a photoconductive sensor that captures the vertical position of a levitating ball and converts it into a control signal. Additionally, two different stabilizing controllers are designed based on different techniques. Finally, the practical implementation of the phase lead compensator is presented, which can successfully levitate ferromagnetic materials of various sizes and weights.
