In his second novel, comedian and author Thomas Nicolai from Leipzig presents a mini-DDR in fast forward: a village in northern Saxony relives the GDR for one month, with all its risks and side effects. The married couple Beate and Peter Sendler from Dortmund, both in their mid-fifties (she: a frustrated educator, he: an unsuccessful documentary filmmaker), move to the Saxon village of Maulberg and experience not only a peaceful idyll of togetherness but also the longing of many residents for the "good old" GDR. The fact that it is the newcomer who has the idea is hard for the Maulberg residents to accept, but the thought is too tempting: for the village's 400th anniversary, they decide to conduct an experiment: four weeks back in the GDR - with all the trimmings: old TV programs, East German products in the supermarket, which of course is once again called "Kaufhalle," complete with pioneer scarves and Republic birthday celebrations.
