How can we think about politics when understanding can no longer be assumed as the norm of conversation? This book's hypothesis posits that politics, from this perspective, can only exist through the use of metaphor. Only the sensory and concretizing communication provided by metaphor can mediate between heterogeneous and conflicting language games. The political consists of metaphorically expanding language. Based on insights from contemporary metaphor theory, fundamental texts of political philosophy are reinterpreted in light of the metaphorical politics hypothesis. In particular, Hannah Arendt's and Jean-François Lyotard's Kantian concepts of politics can be understood in this way. A key role is played by the interpretation of Immanuel Kant as a theorist of metaphor, which bridges metaphor theory and political theory. However, Kant's legacy is also problematized. The insistence on a 'sublime politics' as a means against incommensurability, in contrast to a 'merely' beautiful one, is identified from a metaphor-theoretical perspective as a metaphysical relic.
