The contributions of Volume 6/1 of the "Collected Writings" by Johann Baptist Metz clarify the ecclesiological potential of the New Political Theology. The Church, as a community of experience and learning, takes seriously the subjectification of believers and their authority in ecclesiastical learning processes initiated by the Council. Volume 6/1 productively continues the ecclesiological perspectives of the Second Vatican Council. Key themes include the emergence of a culturally polycentric world church and the transition from a caretaking church to a subject-oriented understanding of the Church. Lived discipleship, with its sharpened awareness of the suffering of others, becomes the unifying and continuity-establishing principle of a learning church that gains its universality as "unity in diversity." Volume 6/2 identifies specific learning places and times of the post-conciliar Church and its theology in response to new societal challenges. It examines, for example, the "Würzburg Synod," the international journal "Concilium," the Marxism discussions of the Paulus Society, as well as experiences with the Latin American Church.
