Product details
Richard Wall has made the two word workshops of Michael Guttenbrunner in Saas Fee and in Pramergasse in Vienna his subject. The detailed photo sequences revolve around and document a world of books, images, and objects that have accompanied Guttenbrunner's writing—a specific interplay of experience, inspiration, and memory. Additionally, the photographs of these deposits reveal significant sections of Guttenbrunner's biography. In an insightful essay, Wall establishes the connection between these archives and the poetry and prose that emerged from them. Alongside this essay, which corresponds with the photos, the book also gathers two other texts by Wall that were written shortly after Guttenbrunner's death. This approach to the great poet Michael Guttenbrunner in words and images complements a selection of texts compiled from his estate by Katharina Guttenbrunner and the author. Among all the books, photos, and images—including a drawing by Alberto Giacometti and a large photo of the tall house made from larch trunks in Saas Fee—he paid tender attention to certain objects. These included a trowel, handmade bricks, a roof tile from the Old University of Ingolstadt, carved shepherd's staffs from Greece, a stuffed raven given to him by his friend Ulrich Schulenburg, the ash handle of an axe, and much more. These were not just any ordinary items that could be bought around the corner, but exclusively handcrafted unique pieces or at least objects with stories that had touched his biography.
