Seagulls are birds of hope and terror. They announce both the safe harbor and the deadly storm out at sea. In the works of the old masters, they signaled the apocalypse, which is evident today in the cycle of droughts and downpours, and as in "Jonathan Livingston Seagull," they have entertained generations of children. The author, playwright, and director Holger Teschke follows the trails of this white-gray bird, of which there are 55 known species today, around the globe. Seagulls have adapted to nearly all habitats in the world, and thus they are now finding nesting and breeding sites not only in ports and along coastlines but increasingly also inland, driven there by the sparse food of overfished seas. Even in Berlin, they are already nesting on rooftops above the city. Then there is the sailor's superstition that the souls of dead sailors find their second home in seagulls. To learn from seagulls is to learn to remember. Those who gaze attentively into a seagull's pupils will realize that nothing and no one will stop them.
