Radio, TV, mobile phones: catastrophe looms! And this catastrophe, which is turned into news, is today always the one catastrophe that initially overshadows the others. From doom scrolling to disaster ranking - negativism as a business principle. We advocate for a new orientation in commissioned communication: catastrophic communication. This differs fundamentally in its intended double meaning (it is both an expression of catastrophe and has it as its content) from risk and crisis communication. Its strength arises from a forward-looking diversion from an impending end. Our idea: break the taboo of the end, instead of maintaining it through interpretative power via well-meaning and ill-meaning propaganda, paternalistic behavioral economics, fake news, or identity kitsch! Responsibility until the end instead of disconnection in communication. Only in this way can new, currently unknown opportunities be recognized, hoped for, and opened up: certainly uncertain.
