Hope has a problem. Right now, when we need it the most, it is failing us. More and more people feel that the future will not be better than the present. Recent surveys clearly show this: over half of all young people worldwide are now convinced that humanity is doomed. The present seems hopeless, including issues like climate change, social injustice, fascism, and war. This development is unbearable, as hope is an essential necessity for a self-determined and fulfilling life. But in order to regain hope, we first need to understand what hope actually means and why it is so easy to hope completely wrongly. Christiane Stenger and Stephan Phin Spielhoff therefore set out to search for hope, its origins, its development, and want to know how we could hope that everything would turn out well, only to find that nothing did?! Hope needs a revival, because it is much more than mere wishful thinking - it is our only tool with which we can already work towards a better future, and that is for all of us.
