The book "Numerical Modelling for NATM in Soft Ground" by Murat Karakus provides a comprehensive analysis of the application of numerical methods for the study of tunnels, particularly regarding the interactions between the soil and the tunnel lining, as well as the settlements on the surface and underground. Given the rapid development of computer technology, the use of two- and three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) has increased to predict the overall impacts and potential hazards of tunnel construction, without relying on macroscopic analytical techniques such as trial tunnels. The book focuses on the application of 2D and 3D FEA for modeling the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) and proposes a practical approach to estimating the hypothetical modulus of elasticity (HME) to account for deformations prior to lining installation. Field data from the Heathrow Trial Tunnel, excavated in London Clay, were used to validate the FEA.
