"We don't need women here" - such remarks did not discourage young Waltraud Mayer when she joined the emergency services in Germany in 1979 as one of the first women. From the perspective of the only woman at the ambulance station, she provides insight into the daily life in emergency services and dispels the stereotype that women are not tough enough for the tough job. She shares her beginnings, the challenges that awaited her, and the obstacles she had to overcome in a male-dominated world. For her, the first time behind the wheel of an ambulance was a leap into the deep end, but it felt like winning the lottery. For over thirty years, she has been there when emergencies arise in the Lindau district and the Allgäu region - at traffic accidents, domestic incidents, and even in a homicide case with international complications, which was later adapted into a film titled "In the Name of My Daughter - The Kalinka Case," starring Sebastian Koch and Daniel Auteuil. Today, the proportion of women among emergency paramedics is steadily increasing, thanks to pioneers like Waltraud Mayer.
