Product details
More than 5,500 names are published here for the first time with short biographies, possible aliases, lodge membership, Masonic data, etc. from two important periods of Freemasonry in Austria. The directory was created from documents that were taken all over the world in 1938 and are still stored in international archives. The aim was to compile as far as possible all the brothers of the Viennese lodges of this period with their exact first and last names, date and place of birth, date and place of death, meaningful occupational title and supplemented by important professional stations, works etc. as a basis for further research. Dates of birth and death as well as occupations could not be established in all cases, but especially in the case of more prominent names, additional research was always carried out in special reference works. Even in the case of less prominent brothers, research was carried out in death records and cemetery records, so that if only a date of death was available, the year of birth or even the date and place of birth could often be determined. For obvious reasons, an attempt was also made to determine the victims murdered in the concentration camp from the circle of brothers. As far as possible, Masonic data such as the date of admission, promotion and elevation as well as the lodge offices held or membership of the High Degree of the Scottish Rite are recorded. A special result of this work is the listing for the first time of almost all 'aliases' or abbreviations of names repeatedly used in membership directories. These results are based on explanatory additions in handwritten or printed membership directories, and in individual cases of abbreviations also on difficult but quite comprehensible logical findings. This first complete overview of the members of the Viennese lodges not only enables further research into sociological relationships, but also gives descendants the opportunity to check possible membership.
