The book "Patterns and Development in the English Clause System" offers a comprehensive analysis of the forms and functions of clause combination in English. It employs a corpus linguistic methodology to describe the current behavior of the English clause system and illuminate its historical development. The study demonstrates how the features and characteristics of clause combination in English hold both theoretical and empirical relevance. By applying the cognitively functional Adaptive Approach to grammar, interconnected studies are presented that analyze the interactions between clause combination, coherence, and cohesion in discourses across various historical periods as well as in contemporary language use. This work contributes to the growing interface between corpus linguistics and cognitively functional linguistics, opening new avenues for interdisciplinary research.
