Melanie Nagel examines the dynamics of political discourse using the protests against the 'Stuttgart 21' railway project as a case study. Through an innovative approach that incorporates knowledge and discourse networks into the analysis, the author successfully traces the dynamics of political discourse. The findings indicate, among other things, that the mediation process has only superficially altered the discourse, and polarization in the conflict remains present. The question of what the discourse surrounding 'Stuttgart 21' is actually about is addressed by considering the conflict areas of economy, transportation technology, ecology, urban planning, and participation. The innovative methods of discourse network analysis and the visualizations of these networks were developed interdisciplinary at the University of Konstanz and have been taught internationally for many years.
