Nowadays, it is common for women to pursue a career in music. In the past, many instruments were considered unsuitable for women, who were not allowed to have a profession or perform publicly. Over the centuries, women have fought against discrimination and gradually gained their musical freedom. The first Wieniawski Violin Competition, held in 1935, was chosen as a starting point for this work. Since several women became prize winners in 1935, the competition can be seen as the first evidence that women are not only skilled musicians but can also compete and win against their male counterparts. Marianna Oczkowska describes the history of women who have engaged with music over the past centuries and how they established themselves in the musical world. Building on this, she recounts the course of the first Wieniawski Violin Competition through newspaper reports and the memories of the participants, examining the careers and various influences on the artistic lives of the prize winners.
