In the German healthcare system, the principle is 'outpatient before inpatient'. Patients have the right to choose their doctor in outpatient care, which can lead to a dilemma of choice. In the case of interdisciplinary multiple diagnoses, such as chronic pain syndrome, diagnostics and therapy recommendations from various medical specialties are applied. A key to successful treatment for interdisciplinary health issues is cooperation among practicing specialists. Based on the theory and methodology of process management, suitable cooperation models are presented while considering the legal framework. In addition to practice networks and medical care centers, the medical cooperation community is particularly suitable. For this cooperation model, exemplary solutions are presented, derived from the theoretical and methodological approaches of operational process management, on how medical practices can adapt to the needs of patients with chronic pain on one hand and to the increasing competition on the other.
