The growing importance of the resource of knowledge and IT-based knowledge management systems is widely acknowledged today. There are hardly any large companies that do not engage in knowledge management in one form or another. The initial enthusiasm for this new field, both in academia and in practice, was followed by a certain disillusionment. The topic could neither be grasped scientifically as quickly as hoped, nor did practical application prove to be as straightforward as initially thought. One of the main problems in this area turned out to be the failure, or even the intentional avoidance, of clarifying the concept of knowledge. It was mistakenly hoped that a new discipline could be built on a common understanding of knowledge. As a result, the field of relevant knowledge issues became extremely broad. Knowledge was not only indiscriminately referred to as all cognitions and data, but also included various abilities, skills, emotions, norms, and so on.
