Product details

Erich Bienheim (1898-1962), originating from the tiny community of Duingen in northern Germany, studied at the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin under Ismar Elbogen and Leo Baeck. He earned his doctorate in Würzburg and served as a rabbi in Berlin from 1924 to 1927, and then at the liberal synagogue in Darmstadt until 1939. With the rise of the National Socialists, he lost everything he had built and achieved until that point. On November 10, 1938, Bienheim was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp, from where he was released after four weeks on the condition that he leave Germany as quickly as possible. In 1939, he emigrated to England, served as a rabbi at the West End Synagogue in London from 1946 to 1949, and then at the Reform Synagogue in Bradford until shortly before his death in 1962. Walter Rothschild focuses on the life and work of Bienheim, who managed to re-establish himself in a new country with a new language despite all adversities—in the author's hometown, where his ancestors also found their exile.
