Product details
'Rameau's Nephew' is a philosophical dialogue by Denis Diderot. Diderot worked on the piece from 1761 to 1774, and it was not printed during his lifetime. The work was first published in Germany in 1805 in a translation by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The dialogue takes place in pre-revolutionary Paris and mentions numerous well-known figures such as Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau, Helvetius, and d'Alembert. The work consists of a dialogue between two characters referred to as He (Lui) and I (Moi). The 'literary' Diderot or Moi embarks on his evening stroll to the Palais Royal. There, he encounters Jean-François Rameau, or Lui, whom he has known for some time, and after a brief chat, invites him to the Café de la Régence. This Jean-François Rameau is the nephew of the famous composer Jean-Philippe Rameau.
