This work addresses two current areas regarding the rationalization potential of freight forwarding: route area planning in local transport and the reduction of manual effort in scheduling local transport routes. It was developed based on the practical problem faced by the local transport area of the Birkart Systemverkehre GmbH branch in Nuremberg. Due to the increased volume of shipments in and out of the Birkart freight forwarding company last year, the allocation of route areas to the additional vehicles was initially uncoordinated. The aim of this work is to improve the existing routes to achieve a higher number of stops per vehicle and to reduce the manual effort in scheduling. Critical factors that hinder the achievement of these objectives are also highlighted, and solutions for these are developed. The primary method and technique used for investigation is model-based planning.
