The present study examines how geographical spaces were perceived in the primarily orally shaped life worlds of the Middle Ages and how knowledge about them could be communicated. Using the example of a manageable spatial segment, the patterns of description and dissemination of geographical knowledge are elaborated. The results are interpreted using current theories from the sociology of knowledge and social geography. Based on this, a general model of medieval spatial perception and orientation is developed.
