Product details
'Right-Wing Rock in Transition' is divided into an assessment and an analytical section. The author first defines the theoretical constructs underlying the work on right-wing extremism and outlines the basic features of the history of the right-wing music scene in the UK and Germany. The crucial role of the frontman of the band 'Screwdriver', Ian Stuart Donaldson, in the politicization of the skinhead scene is examined, along with the adaptation of the music style in the German-speaking world, referencing the initial roots with the Böhsen Onkelz up to the development of the later criminalized group 'Landser'.
The assessment concludes with a presentation of the current legal situation and control bodies, such as the Federal Review Board for Youth-Endangering Media (BPjM) in Germany.
In the empirical analysis section, song lyrics from two bands classified as extremist are evaluated. Exemplarily, the lyrics of Michael Regener, the lyricist of the legal band 'Die Lunikoff Verschwörung' and the illegal group 'Landser', are highlighted. The study investigates how the same content can be conveyed through variations in the lyrics. The predominant themes - ideals and enemy images - are extracted from the textual material. It discusses how the thin line between legality and illegality is exploited by the right-wing oriented music scene. It is convincingly demonstrated that the legal adjustments in lyrics do not indicate a change in ideology but rather are a reaction to repressive sanctions.
Since these legal strategies have limited effectiveness, the conclusion presents selected ideas and socio-pedagogical concepts for preventive and accepting youth work against the spread of right-wing extremist content.
