There existed a Western civilization. This civilization established certain legal institutions, legal values, and legal concepts that were consciously passed down from generation to generation over the centuries, gradually evolving into a tradition. To what extent does Hungarian legal development correspond to the Western European legal tradition? The author, Noémi Mészáros, presents the Hungarian legal tradition in light of Western European legal development. The foundation of her investigation consists of the stages of Western European legal development: the influences of Greco-Roman antiquity, Christianity, Roman law, natural law theory, the Renaissance, humanism, and the Enlightenment, as well as the relevance of the great revolutions, the idea of codification, and legal protection. In this context, she examines the extent to which these elements can be found in Hungarian legal development and analyzes the existence of legal continuity. The book is aimed at sociologists, political scientists, and legal scholars, as well as readers interested in over a thousand years of Hungarian legal history.
