Ernst Ludwig Kirchner viewed the painting and frame as a unity. Contrary to Kirchner's intention of this connection, some paintings were separated from their original frames over time. In this publication, they are reunited in a remarkable exhibition, allowing for the rediscovery of a often overlooked chapter of modern art. As a member of the "Brücke," Kirchner initially designed simple wooden frames for his paintings, while later in Davos, elaborate frame profiles with steps, rounded, fluted, or baroque elements were added. This volume extensively addresses the frames and their history, showcasing for the first time, through high-quality international loans, the development of frame art from the early to the late works of the renowned expressionist.
