Rheinwein, the wine that grows in the Rhine regions, especially in the Rheingau, is one of the noblest among German wines. The best varieties are: Johannisberger, Steinberger, Hochheimer, Rüdesheimer, Geisenheimer, Kosackenberger, Markobrunner, Hattenheimer, Scharlachberger, and from some districts south of Mainz to Worms, namely: Laubenheimer, Bodenheimer, Niersteiner, Oppenheimer, Liebfrauenmilch.

When the heavy Rhine wine rolls and pulses through the veins like liquid gold, when it claims the drinker to a state of bliss and intoxication, in which he sits silently before the glass, forgetting himself and the world, the Mosel wine does not secretly exchange the present for another world in its favor. It was the greatest philosopher of the 19th century who said this, as we, six men strong, sat in a green arbor in Bacharach on the Rhine, drinking Rhine wine as much as we could pay for and even more.
