The book "Role of Fibrates in Abrogated Potentials of Ischemic Preconditioning" by Gurfateh Singh examines the effects of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on the cardioprotective properties under hyperlipidemic conditions. Hyperlipidemia is a significant risk factor for ischemic heart diseases. The study finds that IPC can reduce myocardial damage after ischemia/reperfusion in normal rat hearts, but the cardioprotective effect is significantly impaired in hyperlipidemic rat hearts. The research suggests that a high degree of oxidative stress and the downregulation of PPAR- in hyperlipidemic hearts may be responsible for this paradoxical effect. Administration of fenofibrate and clofibrate restored the cardioprotective effects of IPC in these hearts, indicating PPAR--mediated activation. This study is the first to document the significant role of clofibrate and fenofibrate in restoring the cardioprotective effects of IPC under hyperlipidemic conditions.
